Weaning children from naso-gastric or PEG feeding is carried out within our intensive multi-disciplinary therapy program. This innovative program is the only private program of its kind in Australia and we accept children and their families from all over Australia. This program operates at The Memorial Hospital (North Adelaide) and provides an individualised approach to weaning in a medically monitored and extremely well supported environment.
Lively Eaters Speech Pathologists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Parent-Child therapist and Paediatrician provide extensive and personalised therapy to holistically and successfully wean children from tube dependency. The therapists are experienced at addressing the many issues and concerns which arise around the mealtime environment and a child’s behavioural response to learning to eat orally. The intensive week is the final stage of the weaning journey which often takes place over many months prior and culminates in the final inpatient component.
We strongly encourage all members of the family to be active participants during the weaning process and especially during the final intensive week. The duration of the in-patient stay will be negotiated for each individual child dependant on their needs. Following an inpatient admission all children are then followed up in the outpatient clinic and may require further ongoing outpatient therapy services.
Children must be deemed suitable for this service by Emily Lively following an initial assessment and responses to therapy sessions.
The outcomes from the last 6 years the program has run are currently part of a larger Masters Degree project and will be published in early 2017.
Families from interstate and regional South Australia are warmly welcomed to access this service. To obtain further information about the process for inter and intra state families please contact the clinic directly on (08) 7226 6395. Families who don’t have private health insurance are more than welcome to participate.
